Lawmaker silenced for "vagina" comment

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WDIV) — Michigan state Representative Lisa Brown was banned from speaking on the House floor Thursday after she referred to her female anatomy the day before.

She used the word "vagina" when voicing her opinion against a bill restricting abortions.

Brown said the bill would violate her Jewish religious beliefs.

"I have not asked you to adopt and adhere to my religious beliefs, why are you asking me to adopt yours? And finally Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina but no means no," said Rep. Brown.

Her comment is stirring up major controversy.

Brown, who is a mother of three, said the term she used is medically correct, but the comment still created an uproar amongst House Republicans who wouldn't allow her to share her opinion on another bill.

The bill had nothing to do with abortion.

"I think that the government has no business being in my private business and, frankly, using the word 'vagina' that's what the government is regulating," said Brown.

The Republican Speaker of the House Jase Bolger issued a statement saying:

"House Republicans often go beyond simply allowing debate by welcoming open and passionate discussion of the issues before this chamber. The only way we can continue doing so, however, is to ensure that the proper level of maturity and civility are maintained on the House floor."
