Big victory for children in need of hearing aids

BOSTON (WWLP) — Governor Deval Patrick has signed a bill that expands health care coverage for children suffering from hearing loss; a bill that comes as a huge relief for families.

The new law requires health insurers to cover hearing aid costs for children. Insurers will have to cover up to $2,000 for hearing aids every three years for those 21 years old and under.

Hearing aids typically cost $5,000 per pair, and need to be changed every three to five years.

The law was championed by a group of seven moms who found the lack of coverage unaffordable.

One of them was Lisa Adams, founder of the Mass. Hearing Aids for Children Coalition .

“It’s fantastic, it’s a huge relief. We’re thrilled that the children of Massachusetts that are in need of hearing aids will be able to have coverage through their own insurance companies,” Adams said. “It’s a huge financial relief for those families.”

Children who suffer from hearing loss often struggle to learn and communicate if their hearing goes unassisted.

Though the ceremonial signing happened Thursday, it was actually signed by the governor on August 6. The law goes into effect in January.
