BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) — The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has announced that a casino license will be issued no later then February 26, 2014. But they hope the first license will be issued sooner than that.
“We are going to try to pull that back and we think we can squeeze here and there and we may be able to get it back and …have the casino license by the end of 2013,” said Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby.
During a meeting with the Commission, gaming consultants roughly outlined how and when the Commission will meet that goal.
Phase I applications will be accepted December 31, 2012 and approved by October 16, 2013. Developers will be vetted for their suitability, integrity and financial ability.
“The evaluations of suitability are, we’re told, very detailed, they are intrusive by nature,” said Massachusetts Gaming Commissioner Enrique Zuniga.
Developers that pass Phase I can submit Phase II applications on November 1, 2013. Phase II requires developer’s to present their casino design proposal. Around the same time, residents will vote on whether they want to host a casino in their town. If the vote is yes, gaming regulators will evaluate the casino project and issue a license by the following year.
Currently, the Gaming Commission is accepting Phase I application fees from interested casino developers.
