MA promoting low-interest loan programs

BOSTON (WWLP) — The state is offering financial help to people in need of wheelchairs and other assistive technology.

Most of us take for granted our ability to walk, hear and see, so when that ability is taken away, it can be awfully expensive to remain independent. That's where the state steps in.

Massachusetts officials are promoting low-interest loan programs that help people with disabilities afford wheelchairs, hearing aids, computers and other assistive technology. The Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission also provides funding for home and car modifications and helps people get to work or do their jobs.

For Stephen Stolberg, getting a low-cost loan through the Massachusetts Easter Seals afforded him a $4,000 specialized wheelchair to play basketball. “It's made my life better; it's really a way of keeping myself fit and I really don't have another way to do it. “

Another bonus for Stolberg was that he was able to build his credit through the loan program.
