Lt. Murray discusses gas explosion aftermath

BOSTON (WWLP) — State leaders are continuing to monitor the aftermath of last Friday's gas explosion . 

Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray said the state's economic development office is working closely to help re-open Springfield businesses closed by Friday night's gas explosion.

State leaders encourage businesses and residents affected by the gas explosion to visit Springfield City Hall, so they can assess what assistance is needed.

At the same time, the state has opened an investigation headed by the Department of Public Utilities. Building on information provided by the fire marshal and state police, DPU will come up with their own set of recommendations to prevent future hazards.

According to Lt. Gov. Murray, “What we do know is this hole apparently was punctured and human error appears to be the cause but DPU will conduct their own investigation and make their own recommendations based upon what they decide.”

Governor Deval Patrick says that it's unlikely that any new legislation will be filed based on Friday's accident, if it's found that it was caused by human error.
