Public workers pension getting updated

BOSTON (WWLP) — Public workers, like police, firefighters, and corrections officers receive greater protections after retirement and they believe things should continue that way.

A special committee of lawmakers and public employee representatives are tasked with updating pension reform. Reforms could include adjusting the retirement age or retirement benefits. 

Advocates say police, firefighters, and corrections officers should continue to maintain their Group 4 classification, the highest offered, even when they become managers.

According to Sheriff Peter Koutoujian from Middlesex County, “If you get a promotion, you become a high ranking manager, the fact is if you have to be worried about taking you out of group 4, it might make you decide not to take that promotion.”

Group 4 classifications gives greater protections and earlier retirement to workers whose work environment puts them at greater risk of death, emotional problems, and suicide.
