Enough signatures have been collected to put a referendum question to roll back the state's 6.25-percent sales tax to 3-percent on the November ballot.
The ballot question is binding.
Supporters say the measure would taxpayers an average of $688 each every year.
Opponents warn the measure would cut state income by $2 billion or more.
Governor Deval Patrick, a Democrat who signed the increase in the sales tax from 5 percent to 6.25 percent last year, has said he favors reducing taxes when the economy improves, but not immediately.
Gubernatorial candidates Baker and Cahill favor cutting the sales tax to 5 percent. Neither candidate supports a 3 percent rate, but both said they would implement it if voters give the go-ahead.

I voted yes but I think it should have gone back to 5%. I believe we should have a fair tax and 5% seems resonable. I am asking the Gov and the other elected officials to cut spending. Stop funding anything that has to do with Illegal Aliens. Stop wasting money, cut the funding and the illegals who do not pay taxes will leave. But no, you keep taking care of them with our money and they have no reason to leave. Stop wasting money, start doing a budget like my wife and family have to do. It is wrong for our elected officials to keep digging into our pockets. A fair tax is what we need and you have to cut unnecessary spending or soon you will be asking for 8% and it will be the hardworking Legal American Taxpers that will be footing the bill. No, 8% is to low, lets make it even and ask for 10%.
