Sales Tax on Alcohol

Proponent:Liquor stores
Status:On Ballot

The ballot question would end a tax on the sale of alcohol in Massachusetts, a measure that was just approved on last year's ballot.

The question is being pushed by the state's liquor stores. They argue that the tax is hurting stores, especially those near the border of tax-free New Hampshire.

Opponents say while basic necessities like clothing and food deserve to be exempted from the state sales tax, alcohol doesn't.

Last time I checked, alcohol was not a necessity. If you don't like the tax, don't buy the liquor. This way the sneaky government won't get ANY of your money. Stealing would be taxing milk and bread, but if you willingly buy liquor, you are willingly paying the tax.

I don't like to be taxed twice and that is what the sneaky Gov and the wonderful people on Beacon Hill did. They took advantage last year when they raised the state sales tax. I want things to be fair and having a tax on a item that has a built in tax all ready is plain wrong. I do not mind a fair tax but this is reaching into our pockets and stealing money and that is why so many elected officials went to New Hampshire to buy their booze. For the record I buy mayber 4 cases of beer a year and I buy that on a Military Base, but it is the point that this government on Beacon Hill can just keep taking our money, enough is enough.
